The Judging

A BIG thankyou to our judge Richard Klekociuk who has chosen our winner.

Here are Richard’s comments:

I was disappointed that only around 12% of our members entered this exhibition, but I was pleased with the standard of work that I saw.

There is a good mixture of subjects and I was impressed with the members’ understanding of technique and composition.

Some of the statements however, missed the point. The statement must only be about the particular drawing entered, not about the artist. There were though some excellent statements written and they gave me an excellent insight as to what the artists were trying to say. The statement from the winning artist was inspiring.

Many of the artworks contained wonderful examples of mark-making and sensitivity. I could see that there was a strong commitment to portraying the character of many of the subjects.

Several artists’ works contained symbols, and these were used to great effect.

Well done to all who entered!

SPECIAL MENTION

Drawing 1 (Elena Kolotusha) – a beautifully rendered symbolic artwork with a great balance of ‘horizontals and verticals’.

Drawing 5 (Julie Podstolski) – sensitive mark-making, lovely use of abstraction.

JUDGE’S COMMENDATION

Drawing 2 (Andrea Michael) – A moving, sensitive portrait, full of character and respect for the subject. Wonderful technique. The addition of the 3 ribbons adds an aesthetic balance and symbolises the ‘class’ of the subject.

WINNING ARTWORK – Drawing 6  – Joyce de Ruyter

2011_entry06 - Joyce de Ruyter

Winner of the 2011 Online Exhibition

  –  a highly sensitive, beautifully composed drawing that captures the character and sentimentality of an old piano. The mark-making is exquisite, its symbolism profound. The accompanying statement is quite moving.

This would be the best example of drawing that I have had the pleasure to judge this year.

Bravo! Well done!
