Featured Member for November 2011 - Vivien PinderPlease tell us a little about how you got started in coloured pencil art.

I  have dabbled with coloured pencil for a while but started to work seriously with them about a year ago having seen some Botanical work in an exhibition here, in Canberra.  I then attended a course on wildlife drawing with Chris McClelland and he used coloured pencil with his graphite drawings. I progressed from there, looked at coloured pencil work on the web and found ACPN.  I attended another workshop with Chris and intensify the colour was his tip for that one.  It has encouraged me to do just that. So I went over some works previously done and was amazed at the difference. For instance, the Autumn in Canberra that I previously submitted for the competition.

Featured Member for November 2011 - Vivien PinderWhat do you like about using coloured pencils in your artwork?

I love  coloured pencils for their ease of use and control.  The colour goes exactly where I want it and layering mixes so well. It is wonderful for feathers and fur. Using the pencils over watercolour gives a good intense colour, particularly when shading flowers. I can add fine detail easily with a sharpened pencil. Which are your favourite pencils and supports/surfaces to work on?

I started coloured pencil work using Derwent pencils.  I soon discovered Faber Castell  Polychromos and love the effect they give.  I have a few Prismacolour and like them also. I find Lana paper excellent for the pencils and Arches smooth watercolour paper, but do sometimes use coloured pastel paper, particularly if I am doing a light coloured subject.  I am not keen on water colour pencils.

Do you have any particular themes or subjects in your art? What are they and why ?

My paintings are primarily Botanical or Wildlife.  I try to promote nature,  an awareness of the environment and endangered plants and wildlife.  I am experimenting with works that show more than one subject such as the Autumn in Canberra which was entered in the competition.

Please tell us about any Awards or Exhibitions  you have been featured in.

I have won several awards for my work over the last 10 years, but mainly in watercolour.  The biggest thrill was winning  Best in Show for a botanical artwork Autumn Fruits in November 2008. The most recent was a second prize for the re-done Autumn in Canberra which was also sold  I had my first exhibition earlier this year at Bungendore Fine Arts.  I exhibit mainly in Canberra at the local Art Society and school exhibitions.
