Do you have projects that take you away from your Art?

I read alot of articles about the business of becoming a successful artist, quite often I read about balancing your artwork production with your “business” side.

It’s something I think its particularly difficult for coloured pencil artists as our artwork takes just sooo long to complete, its very tempting for those (such as myself) who get distracted by long deadlines and other projects that need to be completed during this time. It feels like a constant battle.

Case in point is creating this new AusCP website. I have been swamped by being in “development mode” trying to get the site finished to a point that is usable by members without too many bugs. It’s been at least a month now I would say and I am tempted to still continue in development mode “just want to get this bit finished” before starting up a new artwork. I also feel the itch however I must get back to creating some type of art or I start to go a bit nuts.

I have seen a pattern of this over the past 2 years, constantly juggling the artwork with the business side and other projects that need attention. It takes a huge amount of self-discipline to draw myself back and focus on what needs to be done. I often use the 80/20 rule. Not needing to be perfect if its 80% done then that’s a good place to be.

Would be interested to know, what your biggest issues when balancing your art-  is it general family life ? or projects?
How do you overcome it? Do you fight it or embrace it?
What things do you do to make sure you stay on track?
