Please tell us a little about how you got started in coloured pencil art.

Had a set of 72 Derwent coloured pencils when I was a child, which was my favourite possession.  Discovered the CPSA(Colored Pencil Society of America), and Coloured Pencil Society UK, a few years ago, on the internet, and after seeing the fabulous work on those sites, started to use my set of Faber Castell Polychromos pencils.  At that time I was doing mostly botanical art, so on a trip to the UK to see family, I managed a two day workshop with Ann Swan, the British botanical artist who uses coloured pencil.
(EDIT: Very jealous you got to do this one Denise – I have Ann’s book its one of my favourite’s- Belinda )

Featured Member October 2011 - Denise MartinWhat do you like about using coloured pencils in your artwork?

It’s not a messy medium – no smelly chemicals, don’t have to wash brushes out.  You can try all sorts of papers, and keep laying down colour to enrich the image.  Pencils are a very portable medium.

Which are your favourite pencils and supports/surfaces to work on?

I really like to try all brands – Faber Castell Polychromos, Derwent Artists, Prismacolor, Lyra – different brands sometimes lend themselves to different techniques.
I have used Arches watercolour paper, Canson Mi-Teinte pastel paper, illustration board, Stonehenge – it’s good to try anything – you never know – a serendipitous effect might happen when you least expect it!

Do you have any particular themes or subjects in your art? What are they and why ?

I like to have a go at any subject matter.  Really like portraits, animals, birds, plants and flowers.

Please tell us about any Awards or Exhibitions  you have been featured in.

I have won a few awards for my artwork, but this has been in other media – watercolour, oil & acrylic. Australian Artist magazine top ten in a challenge.
